We went a little crazy with seed buying this year and we’re trying out lots of new varieties. As of April 10th, we have planted:

  • Shell Peas

  • Patterson onion starts

  • Sierra Blanca onion starts

  • German giant radish

  • Bull’s blood beet

  • Lutz winter keeper beet

  • Tatsoi

  • Red Russian Kale

  • Collards

  • Cilantro

  • Early Season Cover Crop

  • de Cico Broccoli

  • Romanesco Cauliflower

  • Cabbage

Soil Blocks for Seed Starting

We’re trying to use soil blocks to start our indoor seeds this year, a method championed by Eliot Coleman that is supposed to help develop strong root systems in the young seedlings. The soil mixture is a combination of peat moss, compost, soil, green sand, regular sand, and a small amount of organic fertilizer.

One of the biggest benefits for us is that this system doesn’t use any plastic! We bought the medium sized soil-blocker and it’s worked pretty well so far for over 150 blocks…

We have an in-depth, written plan for our veggie garden this year. So far we’re following it about 90%. We’ll see how long that lasts….

Spring is always a hopeful time of year, when you everything is still at it’s maximum potential. I’m looking forward to seeing how things turn out!
